Why bamboo?
Motherwear recently showcased its new nursing clothes made with bamboo blends. We once used bamboo as flooring in our home, but until recently I had no idea that you could actually wear it.
So I thought I'd take a look at how bamboo compares to traditional textile materials. According to this site on bamboo fabrics:
- Bamboo absorbs five times the volume of greenhouse gasses as an equivalent stand of timber trees and releases 35% more oxygen.
- Bamboo requires no replanting, pesticides or fertilizers.
- Bamboo roots retain water in the watershed, which sustains riverbanks and reduces water pollution.
- Cotton is one of the most intensely sprayed crops in the world, and is planted in a way that decreases soil fertility and promotes chemical run-off into streams.

- Bamboo fabric is soft, drapes like silk, is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, wicks moisture away from the skin, is machine washable, resists wrinkling, is very strong, and passes flammability tests without the addition of chemicals.
You can even make (very soft looking) diapers with bamboo. Just one more way breastfeeding can help you save the planet!
