A surprise in the mail.
Raenyn from Illinois, shown to the left with her daughter Sasha, sent me an email when she got something unexpected in the mail - a card from the First Lady of Illinois, Patricia Blagojevich, which reads:
"Dear Illinois Mother:
Congratulations on the new addition to your family. As a mother of two young daughters, I know how special this time can be, and want to take a moment to make sure you know about a new state law that directly affects you.
The new law makes it illegal to prohibit women from breastfeeding in public places. It is every woman's right to breastfeed her child in any place, public or private.
Please help spread the word to all mothers that prohibiting them from breastfeeding in public places is not only wrong, it is now illegal. Again, congratulations.
Sincerely,
Patricia Blagojevich, First Lady"
Nice surprise, huh? But I can't figure out how they know that they're writing to nursing moms. Or maybe they're sending it everyone. Your thoughts?

That is awesome! I hope they are sending them to every mother! They should really send it to everyone, period!!

When my son was born, they put a little card in my son's basinette that said he was a breastfed boy. Perhaps they keep a record of it somehow, or maybe they do send it to everyone.

I got one too, and I'm pretty sure they send them to everyone. It was with a little card that had a place to record the baby's vaccinations.

That is a nice surprise. I think I would photo copy it & post it everywhere I went...and make t-shirts too! I bet hospital birth records/info recorded with the state provide the list of breastfeeding moms.
Boy, do we have a long way to go here in MA! Sigh.

I received the same postcard in 2004 after my son was born. I would like to get a copy of the card from Gov. and Mrs. Blagojevich if anyone still has theirs.
