Watch this one now in case it disappears.
Some of you may have heard that You Tube recently removed several breastfeeding videos for "terms of use violations." Two of them were Sesame Street videos I posted on this blog (here and here), another showed the 'breast crawl,' and one was a montage (reposted and up for now) posted by the League of Maternal Justice.
It's not clear why the videos were removed. Jen at The Lactivist has suggested that it could be due to the unauthorized use of copyrighted material (a violation of their terms of use). She notes that You Tube has been cracking down on this more recently. It is interesting, though, that hundreds of other Sesame Street videos remain on You Tube. Is You Tube going the way of Facebook and My Space, or is this a question of copyright?
So, while this issue is rolling around be sure to check out this clip. Its days may be numbered. Another interesting note: It looks like this segment was redone later and the breastfeeding clip was replaced with a bottle feeding one. Would someone please wake me when it's 1974?

Tanya,
I'm glad you brought this up. I've been meaning to blog about this whole YouTube thing, and, if YouTube continues to be evasive, you can be sure I will blog about it soon. This particular video you posted I couldn't find for the longest time. Was it always there and I just didn't enter the proper search terms, or was it re-uploaded recently?
I still can't get a straight answer from anyone regarding who pulled the other lovely Sesame Street clips. According to Sesame Street Workshop, it wasn't them, and according to YouTube, the only way someone could pull for copyright violation is if they own the copyright... So either someone is lying or the videos were inexplicably pulled for "indecent content."
I can't make heads or tails of this. I get very confused whenever I think of it, because someone is not being consistent, someone is not being honest... Something's not right with this situation. And I can't tell where the problem lies... Not yet, anyway. We'll see how this plays out. I'm not going to just take it lying down, and I'm glad to see you're not either. :)

I love this video. I remember this song from when I was little and watching Sesame Street. I am going to link to this post and post this video next tuesday -- it's linky love Tuesday at my blog! Thanks for sharing!

The You Tube thing is so dissapointing. There's so much societal advocacy for the normalizing of breastfeeding that these incidents are such a degrading slap in the face. I wonder why I feel somewhat ashamed of my extended nursing in certain circumstances and attitudes like this don't help.
On a happy note, how sweet is that contented baby??

Thanks for posting this. I love watching these old clips. They remind me of watching Sesame Street when I was a child. I also like seeing some of the old clips that they still incorporate into newer shows. It's really too bad that there's another version of this clip with bottlefeeding replacing breastfeeding. I guess they "updated" it to reflect infant feeding patterns. In 2005 (I think) Sesame Street had a big focus on health & nutrition. Breastfeeding certainly fits right in! I really with they would "update" it again, with current images of breastfeeding babies.
I'm so frustrated that the other Sesame Street clip has disappeared from YouTube. I really liked that one! I think you're right Tanya, it's probably only a matter of time until this one mysteriously disappears as well. Sigh.
