One key message in Breastfeeding Facts for Fathers* (Platypus Media, 2009, 41 pages) is made quite clear upfront: Fathers are critical to the success of breastfeeding.
In fact, the book cites a study showing that when fathers are completely supportive of breastfeeding, mothers working outside the home breastfeed 98% of the time, compared to mothers whose partners were indifferent to breastfeeding, who breastfeed 26.9% of the time. The book also notes that the father is the "first person to show his baby that feeding does not equal love."
This book also helps dad understand the basics of breastfeeding, from the "why" (presented in a very compelling list of facts), and addresses dads' feelings of being "left out." It includes a section on co-sleeping and breastfeeding - a topic of another Platypus Media book.
It also covers an eye-catching list of topics, sure to grab dads' attention, such as sex and breastfeeding, nipple piercing, implants, breast sagging, and even 'can adults drink breastmilk?'
Breastfeeding Facts for Fathers is an entertaining, easy to read book which would be ideal for hospitals, childbirth classes, WIC, and also as a gift. It's available in several forms, and in English and Spanish.
The author, Platypus Media's founder and president, Dia Michels, lent her considerable knowledge of other mammal lactation to this podcast, "How do other mammals do it?" It's one of my favorites.
