A Harvard University study has found that ear infections have declined an impressive 30% in the last 15 years.
While that fact seems clear, the explanation is far less so. The authors of the study suggest several possbile causes: 1) decline in smoking (second hand smoke causes ear infections), 2) a vaccine against strep bacteria (though it was introduced after the decline began), and increase breastfeeding, which has been shown in numerous studies to prevent ear infections (by 50% according to a federal study).
I'm curious what you think. Have you noticed less ear infections among your kids' peers? Over generations?
