Last fall I wrote a post titled "Making milk when there's no baby to feed," about attending a training on perinatal loss. In response you shared some very moving stories.
In that post I wrote about how a number of mothers have told me that having their milk come in was one of the hardest parts of the experience of losing a baby. And I've heard many stories of mothers who got poor or no support from their providers about this.
At that training I started talking about this with Carol McMurrich, the leader of our local loss support group, about how to help mothers through this experience. We decided to write a brochure for mothers who have experienced the loss of a baby during pregnancy, at birth, or in infancy, on how to manage lactation.
I'm happy to share this brochure, called "Lactation after Loss," with you, and encourage you to use it however you see fit. In it we discuss what to expect, how to cease production of milk, and how to donate to a milk bank if that feels right.
I'll have a podcast interview on this topic to share on the Motherlove Blog in a few months, as well.
