In what UNICEF describes as a major policy shift, South Africa has changed its infant feeding policy for mothers with HIV.
Previously, mothers were given formula to feed to their babies. Now, based on evidence that this policy was causing an increase in infant mortality due to problems such as diarrhea and pnenmonia which exceeded the risk of contracting HIV (especially with the use of antiretroviral drugs), the government is promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
